Former Delta State Football Standout Rodney Hughes Passes Away

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The #DSUFamily is saddened to learn of the passing of former football standout Rodney Hughes.

Hughes, a 6-foot-1 former wide receiver for the Green and White, was a Memphis native who starred at Memphis Westwood High School. Hughes entered Delta State having won All-City, All-League, All-County, Best Offensive Team Player and was an Honorable Mention All-State performer. 

Hughes, who was an Aviation Management major at DSU, caught 19 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns in 1988 for the Statesmen. He also hauled in 31 passes for 586 yards and five touchdowns in 1987 on his way to being a four-time letter winner for Delta State.

The wideout went on to play in the Canadian Football League in 1990 for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Hughes caught four passes for 48 yards that season for Winnipeg.
