Long-time CFL defensive coordinator Rich Stubler dead at 74

By 3Down Staff -August 27, 2023

Long-time CFL coach Rich Stubler has passed away at the age of 74, sources have confirmed to 3DownNation. The news was first reported by Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette.

Stubler’s final CFL season came in 2021 as a defensive assistant with the Toronto Argonauts. He last served as a defensive coordinator for Clearwater Academy International, a Florida-based prep school that produces a significant amount of Canadian NCAA players.

The native of Glenwood Springs, Col. first came to the CFL in 1983 as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator and would go on to spend more than three decades in the league, winning five Grey Cup championships. He held the same position with the Argos, Edmonton Football Team, B.C. Lions, Calgary Stampeders, and Montreal Alouettes; becoming arguably the most influential defensive mind in the CFL.

Stubler also spent part of one season as head coach of Toronto in 2008, going 4-6 before he was fired.

Prior to coming to Canada, he had assistant coaching and defensive coordinating stops at Colorado, Colorado State, Southern Methodist, New Mexico State and University of Oregon.
