CFLAA Legends of the Game Profile – Geroy Simon
His CFL career was nothing short of sensational. As many CFL fans will attest, it was a pleasure to watch Geroy Simon make his Superman pose in the end zone after scoring a touchdown.
Following a stellar college career at the University of Maryland where he finished second in all-time receiving for catches and (185) and receiving yards (2,059), Simon signed with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. After spending the season on the Steeler’s practice roster, Simon made his way north to the CFL and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Simon, a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, played two seasons with the Bombers before joining the BC Lions as a free agent. From that point on a legend was born as Simon dazzled CFL fans across the Nation with his uncanny ability to make great catches at key times.
He also showed a remarkable consistency in the 237 regular season games he played for Winnipeg, BC and Saskatchewan. Through his dedication to the game he became the all-time CFL receiving leader with 1,029 receptions for 16,352 yards. He also added 103 touchdowns.
Simon, who was known as a locker room leader, dressed for 18 playoff games. He also lead his team to four Grey Cup Championship games and has his name etched on the Cup three times, two with the Lions (2006, 2011) and one with the Roughriders (2013).
A six-time CFL All-Star and seven-time West Division All-Star, Simon was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 2006 after setting career-highs in receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,856).
Today, Simon is a valuable member of the Lions’ football operations scouting and evaluating players. His Hall of Fame career and his ability to find ways to win now makes Simon the perfect choice to play a mentorship role with current players.
Geroy Simon also continues to make a mark on the CFL and loyal fans from coast to coast through special appearances and charity work. As the crowning glory to his career, Simon will be inducted into Canadian Football Hall of Fame later this year.
