CFL Alumnus Mervyn Collins Passes

MERVYN DOUGLAS COLLINS, age 85 passed away on June 12, 2019, in Ottawa Ontario. After a long struggle with Alzheimers, he is finally at rest.

Merv was born August 10, 1933, and lived in Toronto for his formative years. In 1953 Merv started his professional football career with the CFL, beginning his career with the Toronto Argonauts. He had a short stint with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but played the majority of his career with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He won a Grey Cup with the Riders in 1960. He went on to play with the Edmonton Eskimos, retiring in 1967.

Merv at this point decided to continue his education receiving a degree from the University of Alberta then coming back to the University of Ottawa to receive his Master’s Degree. Merv enjoyed many years as a teacher and later a career in human resources.

Loving husband to Christa for 56 years, cherished father to David, Natalie, and Steven. Supportive father-in-law to Alison and Kelly. Beloved grandfather to Michael, Marissa, Wyatt, and Vaughn. Survived by his brother Gary and his wife Betty.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Society.
