CFL Alumnus Eldon Fortie Passes

Eldon Fortie passed away in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday, January 6 at the age of 79. The former college football star was a native of Salt Lake City, Utah. He starred at tailback for BYU from 1960-62 and was the program’s first All-America player. He held BYU’s single-game rushing record until Jamaal Williams’ performance against Toledo in 2016. Fortie was inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. His No. 40 jersey was the first jersey ever retired at BYU. In 1962, he ran for 1,149 yards and 14 TDs but more impressively also threw for 814 yards with 7 TDs. He finished 10th in the Heisman Voting. In 1963 he signed to play professionally in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos. Condolences to his family and friends and may he Rest in Peace.
