CFL Alumnus David Doane Passes

A memorial service for David Doane was held on May 3, 2008, in Portland, Ore., where David had lived over the last four years. After suffering a broken hip, David underwent health challenges that culminated in his death on April 25, 2008. His daughter was at his side at the time of death and he was mourned by many old and new friends. Born in New Castle, Ind., to Helen O’neil Doane and Martin Doane, David went on to live with his family at Helmar Farm in Joplin, Mo. He tragically lost his brother, Marty to polio, when Marty was 16. As a youth, David taught riding lessons and competed in regional horse shows. His love of horses and dogs continued throughout his life; he later rode in fox hunting events in Ireland. He also loved sports, especially football. David played quarterback at the University of Missouri and then briefly played for the Toronto Argonauts. He married Judy Perkins and though they later divorced after having two children, they remained loving friends. Successful in the business world, David began his career in his father’s animal feed business. He then worked in Chicago, but eventually settled in Los Angeles, establishing Dad’s Foods, where his son, Christopher worked with him for many years. After retiring in 1993, David moved to Ireland, which he loved as passionately as he loved football and horses. He lived there in a grand, almost “fairy tale” lifestyle until a stroke and financial difficulties brought him back to the States. David Doane was always dynamic, generous and extremely hospitable. His charisma attracted people from all walks of life, including famous celebrities. He is remembered for his sincere and sometimes lavish generosity with friends and strangers. His generosity included providing transport to the U.S. and life-saving surgery for a number of children from third world countries. David lost his beloved son, Christopher from an aneurism last August when Chris was 47. He is survived by his former wives; his daughter, Marci; and six grandchildren. He will be joining his mother, father and brother at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City.Published on May 10, 2008
