CFL Alumnus Bob Houmard Passes

WINTER HAVEN – Bob ‘Hoss’ Houmard, 74, crossed the final goal line surrounded by his family on March 29, 2021. He was born on February 1, 1947 in Wooster, OH to Milo and Gloria Houmard. Hoss was a Physical Education Teacher with Polk County Schools for over 25 years until he retired in 2006. Jewett School of the arts Athletic field is named in his honor. This is where Houmard started his teaching career in Polk Country.

Houmard was an all-American both in high school and in college where he attended Ohio University class of 1969. He was drafted by the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969. During training/tryout camp, Houmard was approached to play professionally in Canada for the Canadian Football League (CFL). He accepted and played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Edmonton Eskimos. Houmard’s professional career ended abruptly after a tractor accident on his farm in Smithville Ohio in 1974.

In his free time Hoss enjoyed fishing with friends, spending quality time with his grandchildren, making woodworking projects for Country Primitives and lots of family gatherings. He served as an officer and was an active member of the Winter Haven Lunker Lovers fishing club for several years.

Hoss is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Vicki and son-in-law Chad Harrison. He is survived by his brother Ron (Barb) Houmard; children Nikki Harrison (Scott Stewart), Ty Houmard (Melissa Ethington), and Ryan (Lori) Houmard; seven grandchildren, Doug Harrison, Tori Harrison, Kylee Stewart, Haileigh Houmard, Stephen Houmard, Isabelle Houmard, Wyatt Houmard; and one great-grandchild Bristol Harrison.

There will be a private family gathering and then a public Celebration of life event. This will take place at Grove Roots 302 3rd Street SW Winter Haven, FL 33880 Saturday, MAY 22nd from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

Coach Houmard will be Missed by all AND definitely loved my MOST. We Love you Daddy. YOU ARE THE BEST PART OF ALL OF US! Thank you for being such an incredible Dad and a positive mentor to all the people you’ve touched.
