MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes are in mourning following the death of Steve Ferrughelli, who suddenly died at his home in Valleyfield last Saturday at the age of 67.
Ferrughelli, an American running back, joined the Alouettes in 1973 and helped the team lift the Grey Cup the following season, when he amassed 1,124 rushing yards during the season, which gave him the East division’s rushing crown. The former Rutgers University Scarlet Knight achieved an unusual feat, as he was named the MVP of the Grey Cup in a losing cause in 1975, as the Alouettes fell to the Edmonton Eskimos by one point in the final game of the CFL season.
In 43 games in the CFL, including 38 with the Alouettes, he accumulated 2,763 rushing yards. Following his career, Ferrughelli remained in Montreal.
